If DOMA is stricken down would the federal govt recognize civil unions, like Illinois, Hawaii, etc., or must it be a marriage?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-497484732376418396.post-52008010397751898742011-05-17T13:44:41.524-05:002011-05-17T13:44:41.524-05:00That remains to be seen, it would likely be depend...That remains to be seen, it would likely be dependent on a State Department ruling, but likely U.S. territories would recognize same-sex marriages from out of territory if this passed.Daniel Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08005254570208749657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-497484732376418396.post-41154410380511102482011-05-16T16:22:22.659-05:002011-05-16T16:22:22.659-05:00Very informative. If DOMA was repealed or struck down today (with no inclusion law passed), how would the Federal territories have to comply, ie US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, etc? Since they follow federal law, would they have to recognize marriages from other states or then have to issue same-sex marriage licenses, or would it still be up to their territorial government to recognize?<br />Thanks in advance.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
